I thought of that and even was looking at a few when I found the 284. While a smaller displacement than a 400, I would bet the power to weight ratio of the 284 would generate similar performance characteristics being that is somewhat lighter. With the improved suspension, I think the 284 is probably a better overall bike for what I am looking for.
I was also worried that a 400 might be a little much for me given that I have been out of the saddle for a few years. I don't want to over do it since I am just getting back into riding.
At some point I may want to move into a bigger bike. I thought of the CRF450X as those seem to be all over the place for sale. Weight difference between the 450 and 250 is about 30Lbs. With some work, you could probably shed a good portion of that without sacraficing too much.
I think if the bike can be made more reliable via a piston and valve change, that would be a good step up from this current bike. By then the price of a well maintained new one should be more reasonable as well.
Time will tell though.
