you gain hp your engine does not last as long
you move the power-band up you loose your bottom end
you gain hp you loose fuel economy (except in some diesels)

i hate trade-offs

Well, in lots of cars (which is where fuel economy matters) gaining hp does equal more fuel economy. For example, a drop in K&N filter does add hp and fuel economy. Have you heard about grooving? Grooving gains excessive hp, fuel economy, and seems to extend engine life.

The grooving of the engine head. Apparently lots of people do it and it is super solid and gives great mpg gains.

Do you have one in your car? I have a full cold air intake and I am very happy with it as well.

i would think that the grooving would make the head suck more heat out of the cylinder

i like k&n as well but they are not good for large displacement engines from what i hear
something about them separating and letting dirt in(this may be false information though)

Ya, this is very true. The common K&N joke is: "K&N, We keep the big stuff out."
