thats awesome how often u get to ride, but have u ever let him ride yur bike and u ride his 450. i believe u that u beat him, if u ride a 2 stroke right it is technically faster, but if u fall of of yur powerband yur screwed. ive ridden 2's before, but i just enjoy having power even way down low. its rider pref and skill that determines whos gonna go faster.

man im not lookin forward to the next teardown of my rmz250. there are a lot of parts that need replacing on a 4 stroke if u want to do it right. next rebuild is definately gonna cost at least $1000. going for full set of kibblewhite valves, wiseco high compression piston, hinson basket plates and springs, and of course new tires. if i have the extra cash i might look into new cams, such as hot cams. anyone had much experience with those? noticeable diff from them? ya i guess all this work is worth having the power of a 4 stroke.

I stumbled on this site and registered just so I could reply to this thread, even if it is old. These little facts should be hard to argue with:
1: if a 4 cycle is so superior why is it allowed to have twice the displacement as the 2 cycle
2: why does the 4 cycle cost 3 times as much to rebuild
3: why does the 4 cycle cost more and weigh more
4: at my local track most of the bikes in the c class are 2 cycle, the b class about 50/50, and the ones in the a class that daddy didnt buy are still 2 cycle and finish with a position that I would be happy with ( podium to mid pack )

well, ill answer questions 1 and 3 first. so even though the engine has twice the displacement, and many more parts it only weighs around 7lbs more. my rmz250 is titled at 203 and yamaha claims 196 for their yz125. in my opinion dealing with 7lbs more is worth having real usable bottom end power. also 4 strokes do cost many many times more to rebuild. I MADE THE SACRIFICE to ride a 4. i know wat things cost and am currently dropping $1500 on my bike. i couldnt afford a 4 and started with a 2 but i worked my way up to a 4 and the difference in power is insane. also if a 2 stroke was a superior engine dont you think the pros would be racing on 2's instead. granted i know many pros still use them, but lets look at supercross. ampd mobile world tour, 4's. now theres got to be a reason........???? the engines are superior. its just that simple, if 2 strokes were better they would be using them but they dont! also wat does it matter if displacement is double? its actually kinda sad because bigger displacement == more friction on the walls because of more surface area and a heavier piston, BUT THE 4 STROKE REVS HIGHER THAN THE 2! plus not only is there more friction and weight in the piston, there is also so much more rotational mass such as a pair of cams, the force of the valve springs on the cams, the cam chain, and cam sprockets. yet somehow the 4 is still reving higher than a 2. so as far as #1 i dont know why the settled on twice the displacement but it works. #2 if u want to ride a 4 you're going to have to make the sacrifice in cost. i barely have money but riding is my life so i sacrificed other things for my bike. #3 would people stop saying that 4's are so much more in weight. wat is 7lbs. you wont even notice it, plus the enigine angle and the height of where the engine sets in the frame makes 4 strokes feel nice and light. ya i know fmx pros roll with 2 strokes because of that 7lbs not to mention that all the rotational parts throw them off in the air. #4 ya, i know, 4 strokes are better. those are my feelings and thanks for letting us know yours. happy to have you on this site.

    Oh! Welcome to the boards.

Now I have had both options. Yes a few years back the thumpers were alot heavier then the 2strokes but things have came a long way since then. I remember my first reason for switching was Cali bike registration laws and public land. As soon as the red sticker came along it is almost impossible to get your newer 2stroke bike out to any state park. Once I switched over I never went back! The power is so much smoother and as the 4strokes got lighter it just became a much more natural choice for all my riding. Yes there were times my yz450f would beat me up on a 115 mile enduro and I would have been better off riding my 250 but that was then and this is now. Its all up to the person which is better because only you can decide what you like more. Niether is better then the other and you can sit here all day and argue both sides all day long. The question is are you happy with your bike?
