I'm a novice rider... When I am in a situation where I am moving at a good pace in 4th or 5th gear and I have to slow down almost to a stand still (whether because of an obstruction on the trail or whatever), what is the proper technique here. ...What I have been doing in this situation is pulling in the clutch/hitting the brakes hard/ and downshifting a few gears rapidly/then releasing the clutch/ and reengaging the throttle -the biggest problem I have had with this is that I am not always conscious of what gear I'm in when I hit the brakes. As a result, when I release the clutch an reengage the throttle, I'm not sure if I'm in 1st or second gear. It's not that big a deal, but it would be great to know the correct way to do this. riding a '95 KLX250
You're doing it correctly but try this, try downshifting less, where as you do 3 downshifts only do 2.
it depends on the situation and how slow you want to go, obviously sky high rpm's aren't ideal, so go a gear higher.
