I'm a novice rider... When I am in a situation where I am moving at a good pace in 4th or 5th gear and I have to slow down almost to a stand still (whether because of an obstruction on the trail or whatever), what is the proper technique here.
...What I have been doing in this situation is
pulling in the clutch/hitting the brakes hard/ and downshifting a few gears rapidly/then releasing the clutch/ and reengaging the throttle
-the biggest problem I have had with this is that I am not always conscious of what gear I'm in when I hit the brakes. As a result, when I release the clutch an reengage the throttle, I'm not sure if I'm in 1st or second gear. It's not that big a deal, but it would be great to know the correct way to do this.

    You're doing it correctly
but try this, try downshifting less, where as you do 3 downshifts only do 2.

Is it ideal to be in 2nd gear when you reengage the throttle?

it depends on the situation and how slow you want to go, obviously sky high rpm's aren't ideal, so go a gear higher.
