    Hi everyone !

I joined the forum because i'm having trouble starting my bike and i was hoping you guys could help me out :)

I have a '86 suzuki dr 600 that was sitting in a garage for the last 5 years .. it belonged to my father , i know it worked 5 years ago , but it was always a pain in the ass to start it ..

I got it started 2 times (different days) and after A LOT of kicks. (probably just lucky..)
it runs pretty good , i do think it maybe needs some fine tuning because it got pretty hot and it was only running for 2 min (but it was standing still , so maybe its normal .. i don't know)

This is what i do : i pull my (manual) decompression lever and hold it , i kick it a few times, just to clean it a bit inside.

now.. if i pull my decompression lever en gently push my kickstarter down a few times , my decompression handle pops back .. i'm not sure but i think this is point where i need to bring my kickstart back up and kick it as hard as i can .. but it allways kicks back on my foot .. yes it hurts .. :p

now someone told me to search for the point on my kick start where it is really hard to push it down , then pull my decompression lever and push it just a little bit further , so you are at the dead center point.. but this also gives me a nice kick back ..

I found a manual and in it , i found out that the lever on the steer of the bike is a manual decompression and on the engine an automatic decompression , can someone maybe explain why this is ?

I'm hoping someone can help me and give me some tips ..

    Thanks !

    Nice looking bike!

Big bore thumpers are a bit of a pain to start, you should find Top Dead Center (the point that was given to you) let go of the decompression release, and kick it.

also, on a unrelated note, after sitting for 5 years it could probably benefit from a little bit of carb cleaning.
    Welcome to the forums!
