| The Spam man | i wouldnt cool my welds with water, it makes them weaker. its best to let them cool naturally. (not even air)

| Administrator | Actually TJ, rapid cooling of hot metal in general causes a harder but more brittle piece of metal. However, to fix that you heat it up and cool it rapidly, then heat it again and cool it slowly. Problem fixed. So the harder weld, usually cancels out the brittle part. Just try to drill through a weld.

| Administrator | Ya. You can also get the case hardening dip paste that that you heat up the piece of metal and then dip it in. Kinda like they do to glass with Potassium.

| The Spam man | yes tig, but do you think that he meant he was tempering his welds by saying..."and a garden hose to cool my welds"? (no offense at all) id rather just let it cool naturally. besides, 90% i weld, i spend time making sure it has good penetration (i use a scrap piece of the same thickness to set my welder), and thats the only thing, if not more that you need to make sure the weld is not going to break.
