Turtle, you got it. TJ, when welding, if you are burning through, I would just suggest turning down the voltage. Increasing the wire speed will just cause penetration to drop off hard because of all the wire you can't melt in time.

im just wondering what you guys are talking about, i only change wire speed if the heat is waay too high. and it has to be high for good penetration, and of course, when it starts to splatter.

the wire speed increases the rate at which you can travel.
the power lever effects the penetration at that speed.

i can weld on a coffee can at my weld pack 100's max power, but i have to move so fast i get off the seem and my weld is junk
however if i turn the power all the way down i can weld with reasonable accuracy
(btw welding on coffee can = not smart.)

think of wire speed as fine tunning and speed control

tig what kind of welder do you have?
i only have a flux core and the thing can't keep a constant ark

I have a stick and a MIG welder. Its a super nice Hobart which is made by Miller. I bought it new 4 years ago and it was a hard drop of cash. I am super cheap and use flux cored wire for steel but I do have a tank of argon for aluminum welding, which by the way is what I am about to go do. Once again for frugality sake. I am about to go weld my girlfriends rim which has a crack in it. They say when you are welding it should sound like frying bacon, nice and smooth sounding. There is more to the wire speed than just speed of travel. It all goes back to penetration.

i consider myself a great welder tuner. you want it at the same constant pace, and it should sound like a smooth buzz. i always take a scrap piece and tune it real quick before i start. i have all lincoln welders, which consist of 3 arcs, it looks like this...

and one is a welder/generator on the back of my uncles truck.
and 2 migs...

the second mig is alot like ours, only ours has two turn dials, and both digitally show the heat/wire speed.

if the stinger is bouncing, and does that, you need to make sure you are getting a good current (make sure ground is on bare metal, and you are welding on close to bare metal). if you have good current, then turn your wire speed down. if it isnt bouncing, but doing that, you may need to turn it up.

ground is on bare, welding surface is clean
by bouncing do you mean pushing the gun back?
