Problem with XR 50

My son has a Honda XR 50 that ran fine until now. It starts fine, but after about 30-40 seconds, the idle goes way-up, then spits gas out the overflow tube, and the idle slows down until it dies.Cleaned out the bowl on the carb, but it changed nothing.Son wants to ride!! Please Help!!!

sounds like a stuck ...needle....valve. try tapping the bowl with the butt of a screwdriver.

Does gas come out of the overflow tube while the bike is off and just sitting? It sounds to me like the float height may be set too low. Reasoning for it is as goes. When the bike is off, it would give the bowl time to fill up, but not too much due to the float height. Then, when started the gas in the bowl combined with the flow of gas from the gas coming in could cause the gas in the bowl to no longer be enough, causing a lean condition and increased engine speed. Then, after using almost all of this gas the bike would die off. If you could make us a video of the problem it would aid greatly, or even just a sound recording. What happens if you hold the throttle? Does the problem occur sooner and end faster? Does it happen at all?

The bike will ride with this problem. The problem seemed to increase the last couple of short rides. When he slows down to make a turn,or for any other reason, the problem occurs and he can't keep it running.I dont want him to ride it until its fixed. If you start it and work the throttle, it will stay running, while spitting a little gas from the overflow. When you stop working the throttle, the process starts over. Also, when you give it gas, it hesitates for a half a second...unlike before. If you hold the throttle,it does not die.

How is the engine at high speeds? Does it feel strong?

mine would drain itself if you left the gas on with the old carb.tap the bowl with the butt of a screwdriver, it was a temporary solution.

It is a little slugish on take off, like its trying to warm up,but seems to run strong down the street, and i'm 225 lbs.you asked about gas after we park it. we turn the gas off and park it, and if you move the bike a little, it does put gas out the overflow. Also, my boy is 5 yrs. old and not yet shifting. It's a 3-speed automatic. Iput it in 2nd and let him ride it there. It seems fine, does'nt wind out to far or bog down on take off.Do you think we are destroying it?

Here is the latest news..The leaking fuel was due to a worn-out float valve..The idle-up deal, is yet to be determined.Had a compresion test done and all is good..Thought it was good today, it ran for 30-45 minutes with no prob..Turned it off for 5 minutes, and after starting it again, the idle-up returned. No vacuum leak to be found yet.Does anyone know if these bikes have something electronic that controlls the idle? Just fishin for ideas.Float seems good and carb is cleaned x 3.. Thanks for helpin.
