Stripped Threads

Anybody else have the joy of stripping the casing threads where the oil drain bolt goes? The local shop here says they can fix it with a Hellicoil for cheap. Man, my heart dropped and I thought I was gonna have to replace the entire casing.

Anybody else have experiences dealing with stripped threads on bolts or in the holder?

yeah, the whole reason i got my bike for free was the previous owner stripped the spark plug hole and was too lazy to fix it. you maybe able to drill and tap the hole razorsedge

Yah, I considered doing it myself, but the price I was quoted was around $40. I figured that is a pretty small hit to take.

When I phoned the shop, and told them my problem, right away they said I needed a Hellicoil, and that it's not a big deal to do. So I'm gonna assume they're made for exactly that purpose (to be air and liquid tight). It's only a half hours labour and there is a better chance they won't screw up vs. me doing it myself.

helicoils work, but id take a regular thread over one anyday. you dont even really have to have one, all an oil plug is, is a bolt with a rubber seal on the washer, all you need to do is drill and tap the hole 1 size bigger, get 1 size bigger bolt than your oil plug currently is, and get a rubber seal washer.

you have to replace a hellicoil when you take it off, it is aluminum and it will strip easy. and its actually only about 5 mins labor, all you do is put it on and srew the bolt in.
