Clutch Repair on a 1999 YZ400F

Ok, my question is how to determine if I need to replace the clutch backet? I intend on replacing the clutch plates but am not sure of what to look for on the basket and if to replace it.

It is all in here. Basically you will look for grooves in the fingers of the basket.

I did read that post but the bike stops when the clutch is in. So, I will look for the grooves in the fingers of the basket once apart...otherwise I will just do the plates....thanks again for the help...also great write up on the clutch!!

generally (i believe) when you run out of adjustment in the cable its time to get a new cable because that one has stretched out

the only time you replace the friction disks is when the clutch slips

The plates are either super worn or the cable has stretched lots. Did you adjust both ends if it has the option?

ok, so if you are out of adjustment you need to change the cable too, if you have alot of cash to burn you can get a hydraulic clutch, sweet. but you need to replace your plates before they slip, otherwise they will shatter, most of the times you wont even know when they crack because they still stay compreesed so hard that the pieces will stay in place, had it happen twice before, but a 125s clutch is not going to slip that much, but a 400 will, keep them replaced about every 40 hours and you will be fine

I have already replaced the cable and did the adjustment at both ends and there is no more adjusting the cable I have it adjusted as far out as possible to get the best feel for the clutch. So, I guess its time for the plates to be replaced. I did find some good deals via ebay. Any other suggestions for clutch plates..and I dont think I want to invest in a hydraulic clutch, I am not planning on keeping this bike for a long time just enough time to get back into shape or until I find a deal on a newer CRF or YZF 450.
