    Chain Lube

Hey all, Just bought my first bike since an XR 80 when I was a kid and was wondering what you all use on the chain cause I have heard so many different things and am now confused.

Is chain lube the go, WD40, Engine or gearbox oil, cause I have heard that all these are 'the best' according to each individual person.

I mainly ride trails, grass, soft dirt, but once I find a ute will be taking up to Newcastle to ride in the sand dunes, with a group of us that regularly go up. Mine is still on the original chain and sprockets.

And what do you guys clean it with after a big ride, or is it not worth bothering?

    Thanks, Ben

I use Motul off road chain lube, WD-40 will fly off the chain, and chain clean. You may have to brush the chain to get it all out. If you have an "O" ring chain make sure whatever you are putting on won't eat the "O" ring. It is very important to clean the chain and sprockets or they will wear out in no time. Sand eats chains faster than dirt. WW II military bikes were changed to shaft drive because of the sand in North Africa.

Yea, if you are heading up to the dunes I would suggest lubing the chain a couple times a day. People will say it is excessive but it is sure cheaper than a new chain. I use Belray Crystal Clear or whatever it is called. WD-40 just doesn't stick like HT was saying along with any motor oil.

    wd40 isn't really a lube :/
or at least it does not lube well enough for a chain

you migh want to use it to clean the chain, but after that out some real lube on it

If it does not move at first, get a bigger hammer!!

WD40- Water Dispencer, it basically takes the water out, like on my steel frame i spray it where the paint has rubbed off or chipped off after i wash it and it does not rust... it is NOT a lubricant, more of a cleaner. spray it on your chain it will "clean" it but spray chain lube on it and it sticks and will not fly off like WD40.
