Throttle problem: Wide open

I bought a Yamaha DT MX the other day, and when I got it started it took me across the field I was on. The throttle is wide open, and when you try to change it at all, it does nothing at all. I have no idea what year the bike is, except that it's from the 70's or 80's...

was it pinned when it got stuck? maybe the throttle cable broke.

if the throttle cable does not appear to be broken then trace it back to the carburetor. it will enter from the top. unscrew the top and pull the slide valve assembly out if it will come out. if it doesnt come out then thats your prob. if it does come out then check the return spring. then check to see if the throttle cable moves freely in the sheathing. let me know if this get it solved.

Well, I checked those things, and when I force the throttle forward, to close it, it returns. But whenever you start the bike, it's still wide open whatever you do.

id say your cable is sticking. really you need to take the throttle cabel off and make shure the throttle turns easy and then unhook the cable from the carb and see if the slid moves freely in the carb. also if the slide is round make shure you have the pin in the side lined up with the slot on the carb.

How would you fix a sticking throttle cable?

try sprating pb blaster in the housing. or buy a new one, id say it would only be $20 at the most. it would be the easiest and safest way.

ya, you could shoot some lube down the cable and get a little bit of life out of it, but safest thing is buy a new one, trust me, i learned the hard way lol
