gas leaking from carburetor

hi guys, i recently jetted my xr100 as u can see from my last posted thread. Everything seems to be fine except for when i turn on my gas, gas starts to leak through rubber tube used to drain gas from the carburetor. (basically the gas is just going straight through the carburetor) The screw is tight so thats not the reason. Do u guys think u know why or have had the problem before? thanks alot

does it come out as soon as u turn the gas on? have u taken the screw out and checked it out? if u answered no and yes to these question then its most likely the float needle. they are usually a rubber tipped brass needle. after a while the rubber gets old and crusty and does not seal properly. what it is sealing is the flow of gas from the tank to filling up the bowl. the bowl needs to be filled up with enough gas to provide to the engine if a surge occurs and the fuel coming just from the line cant flow high enough at that instant. anyway, if it doesnt seal right, the bowl will overfill and come out of a tube.

yes, i did answer no and yes to those questions, and u sound exactly right, but how do i fix the problem (it has never happened b4 i jetted the bike)... is it something like i need to lower how much gas fills up in the carburetor so that it does not pass the neddle and drain? how would i do it

um, did u damage the float when jetting? or did u even touch it? did the problem start immediately after jetting or did it occur later? u would have to bend the float a lot to get it to continually leak, so i would normally question the float needle but u said that u just jetted make me wonder if u hit something while in there. everything went back together right?

Well, i was really careful not to damage anything cause it was my first time opening up the carb, didnt know what to expect. Yes the problem started immediatly after jetting, the bike didnt even start up. Everything went back together fine. I mean, i might have hit something but i never dropped it or anything like that.

i would take the carb back off and apart. either way, u r going to have to fix something internally so get started now. the float is an obvious looking hollow piece of brass or plastic. make sure that moves freely and connected to it will be a brass "needle" it usually will just slip off. just remember which way u took it off. check the tip of for wear or any signs that would obviously cause a leak. the problem is caused by one of these 2 items. dont worry, the carburetor is actually something easy to work on.

Thanks guys for the help, i figured out the problem. I put the float in the right way, but when i closed the carb, it was coming out of place. Thanks anyway. (such a simple problem, haha)
