Question bike won't start

We just bought our son a 2000 KX80. It is a very nice bike. I has been setup for racing. It has a lot of power. We started it up the other day, but it was not runing right. We shut it off and now it will not start back up. Sometimes when you kick it it will back fire, but it will not start. Any thoughts about what could be wrong. Thanks for any help that you may be able to give.

k, so i have to go through the stupid checklist first. full of fuel? correct oil/fuel mixture? fuel is turned on? what color is the sparkplug? let me know if any of these were it, but for sure check the color of the plug.

Thumbs up

Tig I am like you I think that it may be the plug to. The plug is the normal color, but the little thing that sticks up in the middle of the plug is very tiny. Someone said that they make them that way now, but I have never seen one that small. Their is almost nothing their for the top part to touch and make a spark. Thanks for your help

well, i wasnt questioning the plug, i was checking the plug to determine your fuel mixture. what brand plug is it? NGK? if the plug has any indication of the words "platinum" or "iridium" then this should be fine. if you are concerned with the plug though then you can test it. remove the plug and connect the plug wire to it. touch the base of the plug to a metal part of the engine and kick the bike over. you should see a fairly bright and thick spark. i would not question the plug though with these symptoms. also, just to be sure, unplug the kill switch. i really dont question that either but its a simple elimination. if these do not fix it, i would try and pull it behind a 4 wheeler or car in second gear and try to start it. what is your fuel mixture right now? please make sure to answer all of these questions i have asked so i can give you the best help.

so was the air filter dirty? this should be cleaned and oiled after every 5 hours of riding or so. or after each race. i clean mine no matter what. if i took the bike out for an hour, it gets cleaned.

Unhappy more on the kx80

I just bought the bike about a week ago. When I bought the bike the guy told me then that he thought it was jetted wrong, but when we got it home it started right up. That made us think that it had the right jets in it. The next day after we got it we went out to start it up and it would not start. The air filter was very dirty, and the plug was very worn. So I changed the air filter and plug, and it started right up. I just went out riding on it. I started right up and it idled fine until I put it in gear. When I put it in gear I have to sit there and give it gas the hole time or it will go dead. What do you think the problem might be. Thanks for your help!

here is some jetting help:
http://www.mototips.com/how-tos-perf...your-ride.html

as far as the dying in gear, it could be a new clutch thing. does it fix itself once the engine warm? if so, its just the clutch. could just be set at a really low idle. normally a bike should idle at 1500rpm's. this may sound high but its real.
