getting my 85 cr500 to start

hey everyone, i just got an 85 cr500 and the kick start gear doesn't catch sometimes so i was told to pop start it. i put the bike in 1st and hold the clutch and try to roll it but the rear tire stays locked, so i tried 2nd and the same and i even tried 3rd but nothing. i was told that because the rear tire was low on tread that could be why... that doesn't sound right to me but i'm new to this. why cant i pop start it. btw.... i've tried this on dirt and cement. thanks guys, john

sounds like its locked up, pull the flywheel cover and see if you can move it.

he prob told you that the kick starter spring, and gear wasnt rotating around the plastic piece like it was supposed to. take off the clutch cover and then the other cover that is there. around the clutch, youll see what i mean, its not the engine case but it is another case.

as far as pop starting goes for a cr500, you need to be going fairly fast. have a quad or car for that matter pull you and try t at about 15mph in 2nd gear. be standing and when you are ready to start it, plop down real hard to give the rear tire a bit more grip.

if you are going down a large hill to gain speed to transfer a large amount of weight to the front, lean back slam down on the seat as tig said

i would put it in the highest gear and see if you can get her to turn over first off

if it still does not spin over take the spark plug out and push it to see if it spins

this is a bit risky, but
if you can find a high torque drill that spins 1000 rpm min and can chuck up on the fly wheel some how you may be able to start the bike
but this can be really bad if done wrong

and what so ever, do not use a impact wrench!

i have had friends do this and the result is not fun or cheep

please dont do the drill start. i dont want someone getting seriously hurt because of it. just try to pop start it or fix the kick starter.

yes, it seems like i have done this on something and there was a good story involved. ah, i tried to start a twin cylinder boat this way. it did work because the flywheel had a nut on top and was easy to get to and the engine didnt like to start cold.
