It can be difficult but it can be fun too. Like when it would rain for weeks at a time and I got to pull people from huge mudholes. Actuallu had a guy drive into a ditch once because the whole road was flooded and you could not see the ditch.

Yes, I was at Edwards AFB in SoCal for 6 years. I worked the F119-PW-100 (Raptor Motor) for a shy of a year. The motor is a beast! I was standing next to one while it was running on the test stand, it was at Military Power (shy of Afterburner). All's I could do was get the heck out of there. It hurt my insides.....really rattles you.

Some trivia for all you gearheads. In the jet engine would we ddont get caught up in Horse Power. We deal in pounds of thrust. I was shooting the bul with a Pratt and Whitney engineer. He told me that one blade off the High Pressure Turbine Rotor extracts 1,000 HP from the combustion process. The kicker, the rotor has 52 blades. That's 52,000 horse power from that one rotor.

To break it down. You have an annular combustor (looks like a hollowed out doughnut). You have spray nozzles atomizing the fuel in spray and that mixes with the air from the dilution holes in the combustor. The you have your combustion...the air then travels through one stage of statonary vanes (stators) to get straightened out and directed onto the blades of the High Pressure Turbine. The air forces the turbine to turn, much like water over a water wheel. The air temps around that area is about 2000-2400 degree's. That is it in a nutshell. There are several more turbines andd rotors...compressor, fan..LPT...etc. I just wanted to throw out the 52,000 HP....wild!

I have worked mainly F-16 engines most of my career (F110-GE-129 and F110-GE-100). I have also worked B-2 Stealth Bomber motor (F118), B-1 Bomber (F101) and A-10 (TF-34). The A-10 was a favorite. I love that plane. I worked it and its enngines ont he flightline for 3 years. Its a flying tank. I'd be more scared of that than anything else we have. When that 30mm gatling gun spoons up....something is dying.

No, they almost did before the Gulf War. It played a murderous role there.
