i bet hes still running it with no problems. i just fixed a similar problem on my 87 cr250. these cr's are tough but i have read that those earlier years than mine are especially bad for corroding because of a mix of magnesium and aluminum and even another metal thrown in. Mines got perfect compression but i might have a seal leak in there because theres a whitecolored foam in my radiator after i ride. I use premixed antifreeze/coolant.
If i ever open my waterpump i will have a ugly sight like yours but what i think is its running now just enjoy it.
