1989 250R - won't start well

I posted a thread in the new member forum but i figured i would post here as well

So the issue is pretty simple. The bike won't kick, at least not reliably, I've had the bike for 4 days now and the first 2 days it took about an hour or so of on and off kicking to finally get it going

the 3rd day took about 30 mins and then it back fired and on the next kick it started up, sounded a little shady but im not really sure since im a noob

ran for about 30 mins fairly well, but i wasnt giving it too much since im still getting my riding legs back

stalled in second or third on a pretty flat trail, i tried to pull the clutch in and give it a little gas to stop the stall but no luck

today it won't start at all, it feels like it wants too start but never quite makes it

i've only changed the plug, havent done anything else aside from putting a full tank of gas in

any tips would be very much appreciated

If it has been sitting around then it will need a carb rebuild. Did you just get the bike? Did it run before? When was the last time it ran? Make sure the air cleaner is clean and make sure you have the fuel/oil mix right.

if it sat for a while, pressure test the engine to make sure it doesn't need seals. completely rebuild your carb. do a compression test to see how the rings are. my rings went out in my banshee and it was hard to start than the rings really went out and it wouldn't start at all. I re-ringed it, honed the cylinders and all was fine.put a new plug in it. make sure you wiring connections are good and good grounds. un-thread and pull off the spark plug boot and check to see if there is any corrosion. if there is trim the wire back a little and replace the boot.

ya 2 strokes dont like the lack of compression when trying to be started. also, i always have to ask this question but did u change your fuel mixture, wat are u running at? kinda sounds like a problem with the float bowl and needle or it could be compression issues with the way it just died after riding for a bit. were u able to start it again after the stall on the trail?
