| Pro Mototips Member | besides the fact that my clymer calls it a alternator and not a generator alternator (as in my manual) "the alternator is a form of electrical generator in which a magnetized field called a rotor revolves within a set of stationary coils called a stator. as the rotor revolves alternating current is induced in the stator the current is then rectified and used to operate the electrical accessories on the motorcycle and, on the street legal models for charging the battery" my bikes do not have a rectifier or a regulator... so that means they would run AC current right? i was thinking about making one of my bikes into a street and trail and had this all worked out once upon a time. as i tried to read DC on my meter it ran for positive to negative and i could not get a accurate reading but once i set it for AC it read something like 10 volts at idle and 35-40 volts at high rpm it ran a 50w truck head light just fine at idle

| Administrator | From that quote it says that you have a rectifier. It should be DC no matter what. You can induce a voltage with DC, as long as it is pulsed. I am not sure on your bike, seems to be AC to me.
