Jetting Your Ride

Well, I'll try to lay out all of the required info you need to get your bike or quad running perfect. Jetting is needed to compensate for the required amount of fuel your bike needs. Jetting is usually changed after the purchase of exhaust or intake components such as a filter or a pipe. Vented air boxes can also bring about a re-jet. One of the most over-looked needs to re-jet is a pretty drastic change in temperature or altitude can get you too. For example: riding in the summer and you’ve got your bike all tuned up, then winter hits and you wonder where all the power went. Well if you were to re-jet correctly for winter you would have more power than during the summer.

Well, your now probably wondering how you know if a re-jet is really required. Let’s get down to the technical stuff. Start your bike up and let her warm up. Make sure your using your normal octane rating of gas and the right mixture for all you two-strokers. Once your bike is warmed up start by making a few high speed passes. Then, while in the middle of a high speed pass: keep the throttle open, hit the kill switch and pull in on the clutch. Once the engine has died hit the brakes while keeping the clutch in until you stop. The whole point of this is to see what the fuel/air mixture is like on the top-end. Now this is probably the hardest part for some of you, but I’m gonna need you to remove your sparkplug. I know most of you four-strokers are dreading this with overhead cams and all. You usually have to remove your gas tank. Well now that you got your plug out look at the color. The ideal color is a light tan, NOT WHITE. If your plug is white I would suggest you don’t ride your bike again until it has been re-jetted. Now on the bottom of your carb there is a huge hex bolt. Turn your fuel off at the pet**** and remove this bolt (fuel may leak out for a second). Look up into your carb and locate a brass hex bolt and remove it with a socket. On it will be a number, say 175. You have just removed your main jet. These sizes will vary from manufacturer. Now let’s talk about how to correct your jetting issue. Now jetting sizes go up and down in steps which are in increments of 5 also u can go up in increments of 2. So if I wanted to allow more fuel to pass and I had a 175 I would go one step up to a 180. So now we can apply all this to get the color of your plug. If your plug is oily and very black I would suggest going down at least 2 steps if not 3. If your plug is white and chaffing then tap her up 1 or 2 steps. This process is not always perfect on the first try, but your goal should be to have a light tan plug.

With your bike correctly jetted you should notice a big difference in performance, just keep the plug light tan and remember all you two-strokers, if you change your fuel mixture, you're going to need to re-jet. Hope that helped enough, but if you got that tuned nice and you still think you have some more power out there let me know and I’ll talk about tuning your pilot jet and air screw. One more thing that can make this easier is that if you bought a pipe, manufacturers generally lay out all the jetting specs you need to know.
