Post-Ride Activities

I know for most of you, as soon as you get home from a ride then only thing you feel like doing is throwing your bike in the garage and going to sleep. That’s fine, but don’t leave it at that. Get up a few hours later or the next day at the latest and take care of your bike. Spray it down with a hose or a pressure washer or a hose to get it wet. Then spray something on it to aid in the cleaning process. I use un-diluted Simple Green. It makes everything shine and the dirt falls right off. It also restores your tires to that perfect black rubber. Just spray a coat on everything and let it soak for 5 or 10 minutes until it dries. Then go at it with the pressure washer or hose. Make sure to get everywhere on your bike. Radiator fins are important but be careful if using a pressure washer. Make sure to stuff a rag in your exhaust or buy an exhaust plug. I would recommend buying one; they really help out a lot. Once you’ve got your entire bike sparkling clean its time go in for the filter. Take your seat off and remove your filter. Clean out the air box with damp rags, removing all the dirt. Spray you filter in a filter cleaning fluid or soak it in kerosene. Try not to use gas too often as it really does destroy your filter. After your filter has been soaking for about 15 minutes wash it out and dry it as much as you can with a towel. Make sure your filter is completely dry before applying a light coat of filter oil. I use Uni and Bel-Ray. They both work great and offer great protection. One thing you can do to make sure you’ve been properly oiling your filter and your filter is in good shape is to look into the intake tube and see if there is any dirt stuck to the walls of it. This is not a tell-tale sign, but if you really want to know how your filter is working apply some light grease to the intake tube and check it after you’ve ridden. Any dirt in there and you might want to look at your filter maintenance techniques. Once you taken care of the air box and filter wash the underside of your seat off and put it all back together. Next take a look at all the fluids making sure they are all at proper levels. Now for the chain. My chain is well taken care of and yours can be too if you follow these tips. First off this is for all you non-o ring chain runners. Take your chain off and clean it completely in gasoline. Make sure nothing is left on it. Now this is your preference but either let it air dry and re-apply chain lube or… put it a bucket of oil never to touch it until the day before you ride. My chain is never on my bike when I'm not ridding it. When your ready to ride again hang it out the night before to let excess oil drain and use a rag to get as much oil off as you can. Then re-apply chain lube. For all those o ring chains, don’t ever use gas on them, just soak them in oil or clean them with some WD-40. No need to actually apply chain lube, WD-40 works fine. You can still apply chain lube if you like. Next, I put my bike up on a stand. I never leave it on the ground if I’m not ridding it. One up on the stand I go over every part that might rust or just needs a shining with WD-40 or Bel-Ray 6 in 1 which is some really good stuff. As you are protecting/polishing your bike, look over everything for problems. Fix whatever is necessary. I know this seems like a lot of work, but it really isn’t. If you follow these easy things you will have one reliable bike.
