| Administrator | Air Filter Cleaning Action It’s time to clean that air filter. Now everyone is probably like, “Wow, why do we need to even read this?” Well, read it anyways because you never stop learning. This article doesn’t just have the basics, but is packed with tips, tricks, and all the helpful info needed provided by yours truly. Let’s start with the basics, CLEAN YOUR FILTER AFTER EVERY RIDE! Don’t make excuses just do it. It’s basically free hp. So with that being said, let’s begin. Start by removing your seat, held on by a single bolt on each side of your sub frame. Slide the seat back and up. Next, you will see the air filter and a single wing nut. Unthread this to remove your filter. Once out, remove the inner cage from the filter and set aside the cage. Now, this is important. If you use non-biodegradable oil such as Uni or something like that you must clean it with cleaner made specifically to remove this. The biodegradable cleaners such as those made by No-Toil will not clean this properly. Now before we go any further I want to touch on the subject of using gasoline. The use of gasoline should be limited to a one time use. The only time gasoline touch my filter was when I bought the bike and the guy had not cleaned it in a long time. There is no reason to use gas; it will destroy your filter’s glue and even the material. Just keep on top of everything and you will never have that dirty of a filter. Now once you have the proper cleaner, either spray it on and let sit for 10 minutes or if it’s the biodegradable then mix it with water and work the filter in the solution until clean. After 10 minutes of soaking with the non-biodegradable stuff, wash it under tap water to clean it. Try to wash it from the inside out first because this will push the dirt out instead of into the filter. Now, either option you used doesn’t matter, wash the filter with soap and water basically treating it like a sponge. Once all the soap has been rinsed out, SQUEEZE dry the filer. Do not twist or ring it out. This will damage it. Now if you aren’t in a hurry just set it somewhere to dry otherwise squeeze dry it some more against some paper towels. Once you have gotten almost all the water out you can then use a blow drier on low heat to dry it off completely. Either way just make sure it is completely dry before proceeding. Now get your can of oil out. I recommend something you can spray on because it will simplify the task greatly, however if you would like to save a few bucks BelRay sells a bottle of oil. Bel-Ray Foam Filter Oil :: Maintenance & Misc. :: Solo Moto Parts If you use the BelRay stuff, heavily oil your filter all over and place it in a plastic bag to work out the excess. Trust me, this stuff is not like the rest and will not come off. One more thing about it is that it will stain your filter a bluish color. Now if you have the spray stuff, just spray it on completely on the outside and inside. Let it stand for about 10 minutes and then work it in to the filter. Reassemble everything and head on out to ride, there is no need to wait for the oil to set or anything like that. Now some of you may be asking, “What about rim grease?” Well, it is completely not necessary. I have not run any grease on any of my bikes, the reason being I hate to deal with it. Now you may say that it is hurting my bike, but I did a little test. What you do is take some just plain motor oil and wipe it on the inside of your intake boot, just a thin coat. Now install you filter and go ride. When you get back, pull the intake boot off and check for any dirt stuck to the oil. If you see any then you either have not oiled your filter properly or the filer is leaking or just plain old. There was no dirt stuck to the oil so I knew I was safe. My personal choice is Uni; I get their maintenance kit which has the cleaner and oil. It lasts me about 4 months, riding once a week.
