Honda XR 50 Idle-up

My son has an XR 50 thats having trouble. It starts fine, but after about 30-40 seconds, the idle revs high until it spits gas out the overflow, idles back down and dies.It was running fine until my son rode up and I noticed gas coming from overflow tube and high idle.I know carb problems can cause "choke-out", but I'm not sure about the "idle-up". Any input would be appreciated. Thanks, Josh

have you checked the carb?
this makes me think that the float is stuck open...

I pulled off the bowl, and cleaned it,sprayed out the carb, and replaced an o-ring @ the carb. It changed nothing. You can ride it, but when you stop the idle comes up etc.. etc.. Maybe I need to pull the carb all the way out and clean.Have you heard of a carb problem causing it to idle-up?

yea a leak after the carb letting more air in... have you checked the rubber boot that holds it to the engine?
but i don't know how that would make excess fuel flow out if the float was working properly...

you have to adjust the float level using the tab buy the rod that holds the foat on there, its very sensitve so adjust it in small increments

The plastic piece in front of the carb seems o.k. there is also an o-ring on that piece that seems o.k. The o-ring @ the carb was torn,so I thought that would be the fix, but "no dice".I dont know alot about dirt bikes, so thats as far as I've gone.

what is the tab? this will be my first time to open up a carb.Do you think the float would cause it to idle up?

the tab should have a little spring or wire attached to it to pull the float's needle valve back out the tab should be between the two floats near the hinge

i don't know if the engine would rev up if it was running rich from high fuel levels (which would cause the over flow of gas)

for it to rev up i would think that there would have to be air getting in somewhere...
