![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | Idaho Roadless Petition Needs Pro-recreation Comments From - Welcome to the BlueRibbon Coalition You may have read about the Idaho Roadless Petition in the newspapers lately. That's because despite all of the litigation and controversy of the "Roadless Rule," Idaho is pressing ahead with a plan on how to manage these lands. Idaho has more roadless lands than any other state - 9.3 million acres. The Petition organizes these areas into management "themes": Wild Land Recreation, Primitive Areas, Backcountry Restoration and General Forest. The Idaho Petition's direction preserves recreation and uses as it now exists in current forest plans. That's because Idaho's Roadless Petition was developed with full involvement with local user groups, counties and others who are impacted by this decision. It's a common sense proposal that, while protecting the undeveloped nature of Idaho's Roadless Areas, doesn't throw the baby out with the bathwater. It also protects a wide range of recreation, including motorized and mountain bike trail systems. That makes it unique, and it also makes it worthy of our support. Please take a minute to offer your support of Idaho's Roadless plan by following the instructions below. As always, if you have any comment or question, please do not hesitate to call. Thanks, Brian Hawthorne BlueRibbon Coalition 208-237-1008 ext. 102 BRC ACTION ALERT: IDAHO ROADLESS PETITION NEEDS COMMENTS COMMENT DEADLINE MAY 10, 2007 SITUATION: The State of Idaho's Petition for management of National Forest Inventoried Roadless Areas in Idaho (Idaho Petition) is beginning rulemaking. It is likely that the result of this process will LOCK IN management of our roadless areas for many years to come. It will dictate development of future forest plans and travel plans. It will give us certainty that our uses CAN continue to exist in these areas. The final Idaho Petition rule will NOT make on-the-ground decisions about what road, trail or area is open. Future forest plans and travel plans will do that. The rule WILL provide the overarching framework for management direction and on-the-ground decisions. Unlike some state Roadless Petitions, Idaho's does much to protect recreation and access. Public comment is needed to ensure this good proposal does not get hijacked by anti-recreation groups. The Idaho Petition rulemaking is now in its Scoping Phase, which means the federal government is determining which issues will have to be addressed in the rulemaking process. This whole process is on a VERY FAST TRACK (deadline for comment is May 10, 2007). For comments to be given full consideration, they need to be submitted ASAP!!!! We anticipate a Draft Environmental Impact Statement (DEIS) will be out by mid summer, 2007! WHAT YOU NEED TO DO: BRC is asking everyone to send an email comment letter today. Below are some comment suggestions you can use for your letter. Send comments by e-mail to: IDcomments@fsroadless.org, or by snail mail to: Roadless Area Conservation-Idaho, P.O. Box 162909, Sacramento, CA 95816-2909. COMMENT SUGGESTIONS: It's best to start off with a brief sentence or two that tells about you, your family, your club and how you enjoy Idaho's Roadless Areas. Tell the analysis team that you support the Idaho Roadless Petition as it is now written. Tell them that the Petition should be made into a permanent rule. Tell the analysis team that recreational uses in Idaho's Roadless Areas are varied and valuable. Tell them you want to continue enjoying them as you have in the past. Explain to the analysis team that you want Idaho's Roadless Areas to be well managed and you believe the Petition is a proper balance between protection and management. Tell the analysis team that you support the "General Forest, Grassland, Rangeland" designation. This wise management designation was specifically recommended to "provide a variety of goods and services, broad range of recreational opportunities including both motorized and non-motorized, while ensuring adequate flexibility to maintain forest, rangeland and/or grassland health." Tell the analysis team that you support this wise management designation. Gives examples of any volunteer work and/or funding projects you've supported in Idaho's Roadless Areas. Please be polite and make sure your email comment is sent by May 10, 2007. And tell all your friends and family to comment too! BACKGROUND INFORMATION ON IDAHO'S ROADLESS PETITION: INFORMATION FOR ADDITIONAL COMMENTS The Idaho Roadless Petition manages Roadless Areas using the "theme" concept. DESCRIPTION OF THEMES 1. Wild Land Recreation - 1.43M acres: These lands are now recommended for wilderness by the FS. Motorized travel is allowed, stating "preserves currently existing routes and class of vehicle further limitations subject to NF travel planning." No roads. Example: most of Ten Mile/Black Warrior in Boise NF.YOU MUST LET ME KNOW IF YOU WANT A COMPLETE LIST OF ROADLESS AREAS AND THEIR ASSIGNED THEMESa. WHAT THIS MEANS! We'll likely retain the trails and areas we now have, but no new ones. Use limited to what exists now. Trails and areas could be closed in forest or travel planning, but recreation opportunity should be retained.2. Primitive Areas - 1.68M acres: "Managed to protect and maintain both the primitive character and accompanying primitive recreation opportunities. A variety of motorized and non-motorized recreation opportunities exist. Campsites may be visible at popular destinations and major trail heads or junctions. Recreation sites accommodate moderate use," motorized travel is, "Restricted to snowmobiles and motorized vehicles less than 50 inches, change in class of vehicle and designation of new routes is permissible subject to NF travel planning." No roads. Example: Most of Danskin & Smokey Mt. in Boise NF. YOU CAN ALSO COMMENT ON:
