1. Wild Land Recreation - 1.43M acres: These lands are now recommended for wilderness by the FS. Motorized travel is allowed, stating "preserves currently existing routes and class of vehicle further limitations subject to NF travel planning." No roads. Example: most of Ten Mile/Black Warrior in Boise NF.

a. WHAT THIS MEANS! We'll likely retain the trails and areas we now have, but no new ones. Use limited to what exists now. Trails and areas could be closed in forest or travel planning, but recreation opportunity should be retained.
b. IS THIS GOOD ENOUGH? If you're not satisfied, suggest better language when you comment.

2. Primitive Areas - 1.68M acres: "Managed to protect and maintain both the primitive character and accompanying primitive recreation opportunities. A variety of motorized and non-motorized recreation opportunities exist. Campsites may be visible at popular destinations and major trail heads or junctions. Recreation sites accommodate moderate use," motorized travel is, "Restricted to snowmobiles and motorized vehicles less than 50 inches, change in class of vehicle and designation of new routes is permissible subject to NF travel planning." No roads. Example: Most of Danskin & Smokey Mt. in Boise NF.

a. WHAT THIS MEANS! Camping is generally undeveloped and trail use is not heavy. New trails can be constructed and use can change, for example, to allow ATVs, subject to site-specific travel planning.
b. IS THIS GOOD ENOUGH? If you're not satisfied, suggest better language when you comment.

3. Backcountry/Restoration Areas - 5.5M acres: "Provide a variety of recreation areas while ensuring adequate flexibility to maintain forest health; these areas may be managed for summer and/or winter motorized recreation opportunities," Motorized travel, "General preference toward snowmobiles and motorized vehicles less than 50 inches; change in class of vehicle and designation of new routes is permissible subject to National Forest Travel Planning." Road construction/reconstruction is allowed, "with a preference toward temporary roads; however permanent road construction is permissible based on long term ecological need." Example: most of Deadwood in Boise NF, Mink Cr. In Caribou NF, and Garns Mt. in Targhee.

a. WHAT THIS MEANS! Camping is both developed and undeveloped. These areas contain our most developed trail systems.
b. IS THIS GOOD ENOUGH? If you're not satisfied, suggest better language when you comment.

4. General Forest, Grassland, Rangeland - .52M acres: Show increased levels of use while still retaining some roadless qualities. They will be managed to "provide a variety of goods and services, broad range of recreational opportunities including both motorized and non-motorized, while ensuring adequate flexibility to maintain forest, rangeland and/or grassland health." Motorized use is subject to travel plan, new temporary roads, but some permanent roads are compatible. Example: Acres that represent the "front country" and access points of our favorite roadless areas like 1116 acres of Ten Mile/Black Warrior in Boise NF, 2730 acres of Mink Cr. in Caribou NF. They're also sagebrush bench lands with the exception of most of Fall Cr.-Bear Cr. in the Targhee-Caribou NF.

a. WHAT THIS MEANS! It means that the greens are furious and are convinced that these acres will be paved over and developed. They're geared up to vigorously oppose these designations
b. YOU NEED TO SUPPORT THIS DESIGNATION! In general, it will allow maximum flexibility for improving and managing access to our favorite trails and areas.

• Do you agree with the assigned theme for your favorite roadless area? If not, which theme would your prefer and give detailed reasons why.
• Did they miss anything? For example, the State Petition does not mention that Idaho's Roadless Areas contain many roads and sites important to Idaho's colorful history. You may want to expound on the importance of maintaining access to and interpreting these to preserve our heritage.
