Nez Perce National Forest Seeks Comments on Motorized Routes
The Nez Perce National Forest is formulating a new travel plan that will limit ALL vehicle use to designated roads, trails and areas. The Forest Service (FS) will be hosting a series of public meetings on the travel planning process during the month of May.
As you know, the FS published a new rule requiring the agency to formally designate a system of roads, trails and areas where motorized vehicle use would be allowed. Forest Service regulation and other laws require the agency to conduct a planning process in collaboration with the public to help design the designated system.
The public meetings will be the first step in the local planning process which will finalize with the production of a motor vehicle use map by the fall of 2009. The forest is proposing to analyze motorized routes and areas forest-wide to determine a base system. In determining the forest-wide route system, the Forest is seeking your input. See schedule of the meetings below.
May 30, 2007 ? 6:30 to 8:00 p.m. at the Soltman Center in Grangeville
May 31, 2007 ? 6:30 to 8:00 p.m. at the Hells Canyon NRA Office in Riggins

The Nez Perce National Forest published a Notice of Intent to prepare an Environmental Impact Statement (EIS) in the Federal Register on May 17, 2007. This notice of intent is the first step in the formal scoping process that will steer the development of the draft EIS. The Forest is seeking comments and issues you may have regarding this project.
The FS will be accepting comments through July 1, 2007. Please take this opportunity to get involved. Submit written comments to Jane Cottrell, Forest Supervisor, 1005 Highway 13, Grangeville, ID 83530, Attn: Designated Routes and Areas for Motorized Vehicles.
It is important that you submit comments to make sure that there is a public record of support for maintaining motorized and mechanized access. Comments are most useful if they are specific.
For further information, contact Alexandria Botello, Project Lead at (208) 983-1950, ext 4187 or by email at abotello@fs.fed.us. For further information on travel management and the planning rule you can visit the following website: http://www.fs.fed.us/recreation/programs/ohv/. The Nez Perce National Forest website will be available with local information by the end of May.
As always, if you have any questions or concerns, please contact BRC.
Thanks in advance for your involvement,
