melkman is on a distinguished road
First Dirt Bike

i got this from a diff. thread and thought i'd see what you guys would suggest for me. thanks for the advice.

1) your physical size (both height and weight are important) = 5'10" 185lbs
2) How physical / aggressive are you ? = pretty physical/aggressive. i race road bikes.
3) what do you plan to ride- MX/SX tracks, woods, fields with friends or ????? = woods at first then some mx.
4) Do you have any riding experience? = yes race road bikes
5) Do you think you will race ? = maybe a little
6) Are you mechanically inclined and will you be doing your own bike work? = pretty good. i do most of the work on my sport bike
7) Do YOU have a preferance to a brand/ motor choice (2 or 4 stroke)? = no
8) Do you have a dealer close by your home that you might use and what brand(s) does he carry? = i ride a suzuki sportbike now but open to others
9) How much ($) do you plan to spend on a bike? = can spend around 6000 but would like to spend less
10) Do you live in California? = no
11) Your age? 23
12) anything else that you think would help form an opinion = i only get to ride my sport bike at the track about once a month because it is so expensive. from the research i've done dirt bikes aren't so expensive to keep up with. plus riding dirt bikes is a great way to keep in shape. i was thinking about a 250 but am not sure.

personally? I would recommend a used yz250, then put a flywheel weight on it.
another option would be Yamaha's wr250f, or honda's crf250x.

With you coming off a street bike, I would suggest a 450. You will be sadly disappointed with the power otherwise. I have a CRF450R and I thought it was so fast until I got my F4I which, of course isn't the fastest bike out there but it made the 450R seem so slow. So try to get a 450. You can get a new special edition black CRF450R for less than $6000 if you watch for deals.

Not a very good choice if he wants track and trails but can't argue with Showa.

he needs a 2 stroke i think, the only thing that isnt specialized for track or trails. its the perfect hybrid!

I can too, what the hell is wrong with kayaba? dirtrider said the yz450f had the best suspension, and what are its legs? kayaba.

he should problably get a 2 stroke, i dont thing that riding a streetbike is anything like ridng a dirtbike, but you are accustomed to high rpms, that is what a 2 stroke is for, maybe a 300 sx from ktm could be in order for you, since you already know throttle control
