1996 yz250 carb question

i was possibly going to trade a guy for his 1996 yz 250 and he says that his bike starts and rides for like a half hour but then it doesnt work and he said it is because he needs to get a new float/something else in his carb. He said he will fix it before we trade, but honestly, is this going to cause me problems for the rest of the bikes life while i have it? I dont want something that is going to need work every couple years. he said he just had the top end rebuilt. he also said it is gonna need a new piston and rings next year. Should i stay away from this bike? Are yz's known for carb problems? Should i try and get a different bike instead? Thanks guys, btw this is my first post. Ty for accepting me in to the community!!

Im not sure a float problem would cause that, in general yz's are known for carb problems, I say dive on it if the price is right, welcome to mototips

Well i want a bike that i wont have to EFF around with. Also, how often does the topend need to be rebuilded , and i was going to trade my 89' yamaha yfm 200 moto-4 for it, ( fourwheeler in great condition) but i was thinking of rather going the KX way.

there carbs are simple. it probably just needs cleaned so no big deal on that. if he just did the top end, it wont need a piston and rinf because that is the top end. topend=piston, ring. i would do it. justy depends but right now i have 50+ hours on my 125 topend so if he just replaced you should be good for a while. i would atleast do rings each riding season and a pistonevery 1 1/2 riding season, just depends how much you ride and how hard you ride. you will always have to work on it atleast once a year. shit happens lol but 2 stroke at the most part are cost friendly. hope all goes well

i see posts on craigslist saying " Top end just rebuilt " but umm, he said he cleaned his carb and it fixed it for like a week then it happened again ( the half hour ride then stopped working ) so he says he is pretty sure the float is sticking. how much are pistons and rings? Thanks man, all of u guys are very helpful.

huh if it was just rebuilt i dont see why it needs a new one already lol. complete topend kits, piston, ring, wrist pin and a new gasket will run you up words of 120. in that general ballpark. but if it was just rebuilt there is no need for it. carb parts are usually cheap and floats are easy to replace.

what if it isnt the float and i have no idea what it is? I would hate to replace the float, and then find out it is the stator or something, because i dont wanna get involved at all in electrical problems.

hmm indeed that would be no good. i guess you would be taking a chance. i wish i could see the carb! lol. the electrical stuff is a yea you know lol. if it ran for 30 mins and the float is "bad" it shouldnt run that long and then all of the sudden stop working. maybe your running into bigger problems then what he is saying. that is My Opionion though. and yes i spelled that wrong
