New to dirt bikes

Ok I ride bikes, but more of the sports/motogp kinds.. However, for some reason or another, i've developed a new interest in dirt racing/biking..

And to start off, hope to get some useful tips which i failed to find anywhere..

Basically, as a newbie, should I go for a 1st hand? or a used bike? Also, what are the important things I should look out for when picking a bike for off road practice?(Take in mind that Im currently a rider so i do have a bit of exp w bikes)

Also, if you would, suggest some brands, models or possibel upgrades that I can go for after a while.. THanx!

well do you want to race mx? or ride trails/enduro's? the brands to stick to would be Yamaha,Honda,Kawasaki,Suzuki, and KTM. There are a few others out there, but they are exotics.
Stay away from the chinese brands found at kmart or pep boys and the like

thx for the response. Anyway, im looking to first of course practice with it. There's a dirt track in my neighbourhood and it has all these half pipes. What would my bike need? I mean, extra suspension? Coz I really know nuts about off road bikes if you may.. Thanx

i think hes talking about dirtbikes since he was asking about a second hand or new bike, or at least i think so. but anyway, if i were you and you didnt really want ot get into it to much and cash is short you should prob go used. if you dont know much about them take someone along that knows whats up. but if you are serious you should prbly go new, there isnt any problems with them. ut for bikes you should look at a CR,YZ,KX,SX, or RM 125s. all of these are good bikes but you wont be able to get any new KX 2 stokes because they stopped making the 125 about 3 yrs ago. but these are good and they will have enough power for you. as far as upgrades you probly wont need any since todays bikes are almost perfect from the factory, just and exhaust and some reed valves should do you perfect.

the half pipe is what made me think that, at least I never did a half pipe with any of my bikes
I would agree, for starting out the 2 stroke will teach some vital skills.

well its a dirt track for bicycles and motocycles. At least I think so coz I've seen em there. Anyway, for me, if i have an interest in something, I would go all out for it. Not saying that Im looking for those high end bikes.

Just wondering, since you guys have experience, if given the chance, which bike would you have started off with?

I know of someone who has an XR125. That good enough to play with?

Your looking at a yz125,fast,cheap,light,and simple.
stay away from that xr, thats for kids who just getting their start, it has about 12 horse if even that.Youll get bored with it.
