I stopped by Matt Slap Subaru in Newark, DE Saturday, as they were hosting an event that featured Dave Rosenblum and his ICY Racing team. Visitors were allowed to check out a couple of Dave's race cars, one being an STI that competes in SCCA T2 class and the other being sort of a fish-out-of-water (but very cool) Legacy GT road race station wagon. Unfortunately the weather was not being very cooperative, but in between the raindrops, Dave was also giving out rides in his STI.
The "ICY" in ICY Racing stands for "inner city youth," which was created by Rosenblum in 1984. The idea here was to get inner city high school-age youth involved with his race team?and in doing so, show them that there are other opportunities beyond what they're normally exposed to on a daily basis. So in conjunction with the Swenson Skill Center in Philadelphia, Rosenblum put together a program in which students could be active team members, working on the race vehicles in the shop and at the racecourse. The catch was they must remain drug-free, stay out of trouble, and do well in school.
ICY Racing is sponsored by Subaru of America, among others, and participates in SCCA club racing. ICY Racing has won the Midwest and Northeast Divisional Championships as well as with the 2005 National Championship. This year the team is hoping to retain the national title.
