| C Rider | Hello all. I'm a newby here from Citrus Heights Calif. (Sacramento Area). Not sure if this is the right place to beg for help but here goes. I have a 1997 Suzuki 250 RMX and a 1997 Suzuki 125RM. I am here to learn as much as I can about maintenance, repairs, etc... I only know enough to make me dangerous. Since I bought my 1997 Suzuki 250 RMX it has always run a little rough. The previous owner hadn't change the gas in two years and the float was sticking, etc... until I flushed everything a few times. But... It still runs rough and is prone to crap out, when taking off down the road. Like it's loading up and hesitating. It also has (from time to time) made a knocking noise. Actually... the engine just always sounds loose. Hard to explain. So, I decided to put a new piston and rings in as I don't think the previous owner before ever did. Thinking it would make a difference in performance and take care of the knock. Well... the knock seems to have gone but.. it's still running poorly. Even more so. Soo, I took the carb apart and cleaned it... cleaned the plug (which was black) and took out the Reed valve to inspect and clean it... though it looked fine. I also flushed out the old gas from the tank (about 3 months old) and added fresh gas, again. I also called a few shops to ask about the air screw setting which I was told... Is 1 turn out. It still runs like crap... I messed with the air screw but turning it, FIRST 1-1/2 turns out... Seemed to run only a little better. Then I adjusted the air screw to 1-3/4 then 2 turns out and it seemed to run a little better but it still hesitates at lower r's. When it gets up to higher r's it starts to open up, but... I hear a weird noise, almost like the Reed Valve if flapping or possibly an exhaust leak. Which I never heard before. Pleeeease. Someone help me. I would love to talk to someone... feel free to PM me, I will check this forum frequently. Thanks for any help I can get. Last edited by DobyWillis; 03-13-2008 at 11:50 PM. |

| Administrator | This will work. We are still a small forum and it takes us anywhere from 1 - 10 hours to get an answer on some of the harder questions. Our forum techie should be logging on soon before he goes to sleep so you may still be getting some help out tonight. Otherwise I promise you when you wake up in the morning there will be some other posts here ![]()

| C Rider | Hello... Reagarding honing the cylinder... We were going to but, the book said not to because of a ceramic coating. However... the it look pretty good. The rings were very worn... So it's good that I did it. However. The bike still runs awful... loading up in low r's and since taking the carb and reed valve out... At higher r's there's a flapping sound. Like the reed it slapping or maybe and exhaust leak (like I didn't seat the pipe correctly when we put it back together). Is there any place I can go to get all the specs for this bike? My book is pretty weak. I was wondering about carb settings... Air screw, which jets are stock? Since I don't know if the kid before me did any mods or not. |

| Super Moderator | maybe I have them mixed up, but I think it was 4strokes that you shouldnt hone because of nikisal plating, I would run a compression test and go from there, that or its running rich.

| C Rider | I don't think my problem is caused by putting a new Piston and rings in... It has always run poorly in the lower r's and much batter if I keep it running hot. But, when I tried to clean up the carb and red valve... still no improvement. I also cleaned the plug (which is almost new) and changed out the gas. I have been using a split between 32 and 40 to 1... as it seems a run rich (lots of smoke when warming up and some oil residue at end of pipe). Also... when I get up to higher r's now... All of a sudden I hear a loud flapping sound like the reed valve is opening and closing really fast. Can this happen? Could it be my pipe isn't seated correctly or... the exhaust valve? Could this be electrical? A coil perhaps? Any help hear is greatly appreciated |

| Pro Mototips Member | well read in the how tos on how to jet your bike and why you jet it, that should help with your loading up at low rpms. as for the flapping noise your reeds are fine because if they are broken off or cracked it wont run, and if they were cracked you would have seen them when you looked at them. if it is running fine i dont hink it would be anything in the engine. just check for something stupid like losse bolts or something, i would suggest taking the whole bike apart and cleaning it and the putting it back together. i know this sounds like alot of work but its pretty much free and you can make sure everything is tight and in good condition, and it makes your bike feel fresh. and all modern bikes have nikasil platings and they should just be honed lightly
