XR 400R Vs. CRF 250X Vs. CRF 450X

My last dirt bike was a '93 XR 650L. It was a tall heavy pig. I'm 5'8", 200 lbs., 38 yrs. old, and grew up riding dirt but have been out of it for 10 years. Been looking for the phantom '03 or '04 XR 400R. Nobody sells them (at least here in Salt Lake City) Started looking at CRF's. I suspect the 250X is all the bike I need but I don't want to be disappointed. I don't ride that aggressively any more but on the other hand I hate riding bikes that you have the throttle pinned constantly. I don't want a pissed off beast of a bike either. Any suggestions? I grew up on red bikes and plan to stay that way.

honestly, if you have any experience, i would get the 450. there was a guy on tt who had an xr400, then got a crf250r and he said the 250r was better in every way, so i would dodge one of those. so i guess you could get the 250x, but if you have experience with a 650, you will probably soon want the 450

a 250 x will do whatever you want it to do. my buddy who is a A rider likes his 250 better than his 450 in the woods. i like the 250 x ive had some time on one and i liked it.

a 250x is comparable to the 400r in every way except for reliability, the xr will not have you wishing for a ton more power, but it wont rip your arms out either.

ive ridden an xr400 and wasnt impressed. i was expecting neck-snapping power, but it was really tame. nothing like the 450r

then you went into it with the wrong mindset, 400 still makes more power than the 250x more reliably. its just not as snappy

good for the guy on tt, well see what he thinks at the first valve adjustment, which btw, xr valves last an eternity
