New and Clueless

Hey everyone. I just got back from spending the long weekend at my girlfriend's cabin, where I used a quad for the first time, and I fell in love with trail riding. However, I think that I would much prefer a dirt bike, for space issues and some of the places they can go.

The problem is that I know NOTHING about dirt bikes whatsoever, and I don't even know what kind of models I should be pricing. I like to get prices over the phone/online for things to shorten the list of shops to visit.

What I'm looking for in a bike is casual trail riding, but it would be a plus if I could ride it on the street as well, since I recently bought an SUV so I'd need to get to a friend's place with a pick-up to go anywhere. I'm 5'11" and about 220lbs. I'd like to keep it as cheap as possible because I'm a musician at heart, which translates into poor.

Thanks in advance for any help I get!

Oh, one thing I forgot to add: I never learned how to ride a bicycle, is that going to completely screw me up?

well, if u say that u want a street legal dirt bike then i would go for the enduro series of bikes. check out the wr***f line of bikes by yamaha or the dr-z*** series from suzuki. u should be looking for something more than 250cc's. ebay is your best bet for a cheap deal. and as far as the bicycle thing goes, you will be fine.

for dual sport the zuki drz400 is the best. the wr is more of a pure performance for the dirt thing. plus the zuki is a bit cheaper to run.(dosnt need service such as oil change and stuff as often). welcome to the site and enjoy.

I just did a quick search on ebay.ca for a Suzuki DR-Z 400 and the lowest price I came up with is around $1800 Canadian. Is that about what I'm looking at, or should I be able to get a better deal locally if I can find a used one?
