The Chase Field stadium at Phoenix went houseful on Saturday night with a huge crowd of approximately 50,000 fans. It was the eve of the round two of the 2012 Monster Energy AMA Supercross event which is part of the FIM World Championship. This second race of this season was a nail-biting event. This season noted the collaboration of Ryan Dungey with Red Bull KTM.
In just two consecutive races, the collaboration turned out to be very productive as Ryan Dungey registered his first win of this season and the first ever AMA Supercross Class win for Red Bull KTM. Dungey looked dominating throughout the race with optimum effort and gave a tight fight to other contenders. The Western Regional event of Supercross Lites witnessed great effort from Dean Wilson of team Kawasaki. This rider from Menifee, Calif delivered a highly convincing performance.
Ryan Dungey took full advantage of a good start in the main event of the 20 lap AMA Supercross Class racing which enabled him to seize the Nuclear-Cowboyz Holeshot. Davi Millsaps of team Toyota/Yamaha/JGRMX was right behind him who was followed by Ryan Villopoto of team Kawasaki. They all resumed their positions right at the front of the race track along with Honda’s Chad Reed and Toyota/JGRMX’s James Stewart, who got entangled in the race track due to a mid-pack start.
The action went wild, when in the opening lap, Davi Millsaps directly went down the sand section of the racing track collecting Ryan Villopoto and barring the riders to the end of the racing track. Villopoto’s tough luck allowed both Chad Reed and James Stewart to propel forward and cross the line at 8th and 13th position respectively. After that, Chad Reed, Villopoto and James Stewart started building their way through the racing arena, with Stewart and Reed going together. Just when Stewart went past Reed, he crashed in the exact section where Villopoto crashed in the 7th lap. Stewart then couldn’t regain his earlier momentum and didn’t qualify in the top ten. Villopoto then showed great effort and constantly hovered around Reed. He slowly picked up the momentum and brought the crowd to its feet. Villopoto qualified in the top five.
Finally, it was Dungey who acquired the checkers by more than six seconds and won his second AMA Supercross event in Phoenix. Jake Weimer of team Kawasaki followed Dungey closely to secure the second spot. Villopoto finally finished third in the race. The Monster Energy Supercross event now moves on to Dodger Stadium, Los Angeles for the third race of this season. The action resumes next Saturday evening, January 21, 2012.
