The Reliant Stadium, Houston hosted the 13th round of the 2012 AMA Supercross series last weekend. Ryan Villopoto of team Kawasaki captured another victory in this season and has almost retained his title. Davi Millsaps finished in the second position while Jake Weimer finished third. Villopoto now has an undefeatable lead in this series and has acquired the fastest championship title ever with four matches still left in this season.
The thirteenth match of the 2012 AMA Supercross series, a part of the FIM World Championship was played last Saturday at the Reliant Stadium of Houston. The Supercross match at Houston can be considered as the climax of this season of AMA Supercross series as the defending champion Ryan Villopoto of team Kawasaki captured the victory and has now gained a mammoth lead in the points table. It is now mathematically impossible to defeat him in this series. Hence, it can be considered that Villopoto has won the 450 class Supercross title for the second consecutive time. He has been successful in retaining the title with some spectacular and mind-blowing performances in this entire season so far.
Riding on his KX450F bike, Villopoto has clinched the 2012 AMA Supercross title faster than he did in the 2011 season and now, its two back to back titles in a row. Moreover, Villopoto’s 2012 title victory is the fastest ever by any racer in the entire history of Supercross. Villopoto’s journey to win the title in this season became quite easy after James Stewart got ruled out of the current matches following severe injury. It was only Stewart who seemed to give some tough fight to Villopoto in the race track. After Stewart’s ouster, it is now practically impossible for any other rider to gain so many points in the remaining four matches to fill the mammoth gap between them and Villopoto and restrict him to lift the title again.
In the 20-lap main event, JGR MX Yamaha’s Davi Millsaps was quick to gain the holeshot award but he was soon overtaken by Ryan Villopoto. Jake Weimer, teammate of Villopoto, was also riding well and showed great skills to overtake MotoConcepts Suzuki’s Mike Alessi who was riding in at the third position. As Weimer gained third spot, Alessi was pushed back to the fourth position. Honds’s Justin Brayton was riding in at the fifth position. These positions remained the same till the end of the race. After gaining the lead, Villopoto never looked back and rode with great speed and focus to deliver yet another win. Millsaps tried hard but couldn’t pose any threat to Villopoto. Jake Weimer finished third, Alessi fourth and Brayton fifth in the race.
Villopoto has 296 points in the Supercross standings followed by Ryan Dungey (192 points) and Davi Millsaps (191 points). Stewart’s injury has left him at 178 points. There is only 100 points left in this season to be gained and the gap between Villopoto and Dungey is 104 points. Therefore, Villopoto and his team can begin celebrating their 2012 title win.
