you shouldn't have to really pop the clutch in second... if you can preload the suspension enough it should come right up once you are in the power band

Using the clutch is much more controlled though. I would recommend it. Really, you should work on standing. It is much more controllable. Your shifting technique is perfectly fine for wheelies, that is how it is done. My personal technique is standing. I will idle along in 3rd gear usually and just blip the throttle while just pulling up a bit. However, I have a CRF450R so wheelies are easy to get up. You would think that a bigger bike would be harder to control but it is so easy and you can ride wheelies on this bike until you run out of room. Hey, I'm not a big guy either, 130lbs but I take whatever it throws at me. Like I said, try standing or try clutching out a little more gently. It just takes practice but it sounds like you have gotten pretty far. And of course we all crash. I have personally watched my rear fender fold up to my seat and still be fine. The biggest part I have ever broken is a brake lever.

yes, try this in first gear, just to see how it works for you
1 pick a spot on the back of the seat you feel comfortable
2 give a rev, let off to where if you pin it, you land in the powerband
3 pull back, and pin it at the same time, it should do a nice little wheelie
4 now practice in all other gears

allangee is on a distinguished road
Speaking as someone who still thinks the most important jump is the one you take OFF your bike just before it hits an immoveable object... it's basically practice to nail the technique, and then practice until the technique becomes second nature. Start small, get bigger as you get comfortable.

We're starting our kids on jumps this summer. We have some little pit bike sized jumps and a small double. Once they're comfortable on the singles, we'll move over to the double. They'll start hitting it at an angle, so they'll actually jump to the side of the second jump. Once they're confident that they can clear the gap, they'll take it straight on. Beats them trying to guess and nailing the uphill side while riding downhill.

Man, wheelies save lives for sure. There have been so many times where I am blasting along to spot a square-out ditch that would destroy me if my front tire hit it. I slam the gas and get the front tire way up and ready for the hard rebound of the rear shock. Wheelies save lives.

Practice makes perfect. Should have the power to get the bike off the ground in 2 - 4th. Come to think about it there was a long straight away on a track we used to ride on... You would come out of the corner hard hooking up and through all gears you would be on the back wheel... Should be fairly simple on your 125 if you riding it in the power zone all the time. Lean back get on the gas. Dont be shifting to early now and keep it in the high rpm range at all times.
