Getting back on a dirt bike

Well.. Now i have money (Like I have said before) and am looking for a dirtbike (Again, stated before), but I have been out of the dirt bike business for about 6 years. With school, sports, jobs, what not, and NOT having a car (Until recently) therefore, I had means of transportation from my house to my work (My house is where I ride)...

Well.. to be honest.. my riding may very well be extremely rusty. I have been riding four wheelers for the last four years (My parents and their friends four wheelers) my dirtbike (Well the one I had been riding) Was trashed (1979 yamaha 125 yz) and I am going to fix up the old vintage (Though it will take some time) But before then.. I'm going to purchase another dirt bike. I prefer two strokes because i love the power band, but speed is something I enjoy as well... What has currently caught my eye is a tt-r 230 AND a crf 230 (Though the 250 and 430 I think that i liked alot as well.)

well.. basically.. I want to take it all back to the basics, without riding a 80 again.. (And before i take the time to fix up my 125) I want to know how you guys think I should re-acquaint myself with the dirt bike. Just ride on my road a few times to get use to it? Go slow over trails? It has been some while, ANd I don't feel like sitting myself on my ass in the first 30 seconds...

SO.. What are your guys' opinions on the matter?

i was in your situation exactly a couple years back when i was buying a bike. i was looking and getting very serious about buying a 230, tigmaster talked me out of it and man am i glad he did! i started looking into a 250, being a broke kid they also talked me into buying used and that was the best advice i ever got being a beginner rider, i didnt need a brand new 06 for 5k, instead, i picked up a real nice 94 rm125 for $700, which had twice the suspension, braking, handling, power, and was lighter than the 230 i later rode. and having an older bike taught me how to do all the maintainance and fix a bunch of random things that go wrong with old stuff. it also gives you something to do, i have an 09 now and it kills me because there is nothing to fix or clean or adjust, lol. at first most bikes are going to feel overwhelming, this quickly goes away. like i said the 250 is a completely different bike, in a good way. any bike can be made nice, even if it was ugly new, so dont rule out used bikes....

i won't.. Its just.. With an old bike, I have to to tear apart everything, and my patience for that (And the time I have to do that) Is extremely limited, ya know. I mean, don't get me wrong, I absolutely LOVE to fix the old dirt bike I got. I just started, but it has been a blast, but Somedays i just want to go ride...

if you're coming back, get yourself a nice 125 2 stroke for knowledge and trust me, it has enough power. You can simply talk with TDB to increase the HP. I have a 2000 YZ 125 that you have to hold on to pretty tight now...

I have a 1979 125 2 stroke. I like the power of it (Powerband) And I will fix it up.. but i'd have to go used to get one now, and.. I really don't want to go used...

    just sayin, a 79 125 is comparable to a modern crf100.
ride it back to back with a 2000+ 125 and you would **** yourself, lol

HaHA.. the only thing that has ever made me **** myself was a long time ago on a drop off ride... I use to hate heights. Aside from that.. speed... just causes the adrenaline to flow

are you saying you have to go used or new? Yam and Ktm are still making new 125cc 2 strokes. you can get one new anywhere from 52-56 OTD, maybe more if its a left over and there trying to get rid of it.

You can pick up good or even great used bikes. I know alot of people that would shy away from a race bike, but if you can get your hands on the right race bike you will never get off of it. 1. They are very well kept(for the most part). 2. They have already been modified. 3. Racers are anal about the equiptment they ride. Spend a day at a track near you (if there is one). Get to know somof the people. You will see bikes every where for sale. Not all used bikes are in need of fixing!
