shifting gears

Is it ok not to use the clutch to change the gears on a dirt bike. I know that you have to use the clutch to take off in first, but someone told me that it would not hurt the bike if you didn't use the clutch after that. Like going from 2nd to 3rd and 3rd to 4th and so on. Thanks for your help.

this is terrible on the bike. this will cause excessive wear on the dog teeth(parts that lock gears together). after a while they become rounded over because they are basically forced into each other. after these supposed-to-be sharp corners get rounded enough that they begin to pop the bike out of gear while riding. please dont let anyone tell you otherwise. i have seen and heard many terrible stories about these problems. just use the clutch.

Think of it like a car. Would you shift gears without your clutch? That grinding is what is also going on in your dirtbike you just cant hear it. Use your clutch all the time to prevent excess wear and tear.

yes, think how bad this would be in a car and cars even have synchros wh.ich make the gear meet up better

to be honest, I dont use all the clutch all the time, did you know that if you time your rpm's right with your shift youll do no damage?
its like a semi (bad analogy i know) you never use the clutch except to take off and stop.

but how often do you get it perfect?
it is best to use the clutch

you may think everything is matched wr, but in reality even a 10rpm diff has to be soaked up somewhere. o and not using the clutch can actually cause more wear on the clutch basket fingers.

its still fact, rpm speed matched up right will not damage the gear box.

well, think of the semi's
we ran one of them for 20 years on the same clutch using this technique.

ya, thats way different though. that a huge smoking piece of metal WITH SYNCHROS!!! so you have to wear through synchros and if you are matching rpm's fairly closely synchros can last for a long time.
