i need to buy a new sprocket, i went online to look for one and it asks what size. im guessing the 48 to 52 is the amount of teeth? do i need to see what i have or what is the better one?

yes, if you want the same then count the number of teeth on yours. it should also say on the sprocket so you dont have to count. it may be tricky and say something like gf5-49 and 49 would be the number of teeth. if you buy a rear sprocket with a bigger number of teeth than the one you have, then you will have more torque and less speed, and a smaller number will be less torque and more speed. the change in teeth will not affect things that much though, only like 5-10mph

BTW, Clint. It is a good practice to replace the chain and both sprockets at the same time so they wear together. An old chain will wear out a new sprocket.

its not so much as the new chain will wear out the new sprocket buts it more of a wear pattern situation. the wear placed on the old chain and sprocket was matched because they were both new together and had time to match themselves. replacing only one part of the drive will result in pattern mismatches causing parts to wear prematurely. this wear can be applied to the old chain, or the new sprocket, or even the old sprocket. when this wear is applied to the chain, warping a breakage can occur and like our new member here was saying, if the chain takes it, then the next item in question is your new sprocket usually causing strange patterns on the teeth. so like he was saying, do yourself a favor and replace it all because its most likely ready. however, say you just got a new chain and sprocket and you broke the chain or bent the sprocket, if its basically new then you can just go ahead and replace a single part because they havent had time to match up yet.

ya, thats how my girlfriends bike is. im not sure how the teeth are still there on the rear and the front sprocket is going for the bent teeth. her chain tensioners are almost as far out as they can go with too much slack still in the chain. to give you an idea of how worn the rear sprocket is, i can pull on a chain link on the sprocket and get it 3/4 up the tooth. a general rule of thumb is more than 1/2 and its time for a new sprocket. this measure i was just describing is not a measure of chain tension but of sprocket wear. normal chain slack should be 3 fingers at the rear of the chain guide on a bike on a stand. just some helpful tips.
