Ya, if you get it on then everything will be fine. You may need to clean up the threads with a die, super small file, or even some sandpaper.

why did you need to take the nut off the shaft? Are you going to rebuild it?

You must be careful when you take the nut off. You need to grind, at a 45 degree angle, the end of the shaft (and part of the nut) so that the peened end of the shaft is gone; only enough so that you can get the nut off. You should NOT turn the nut off without doing this. Also, when grinding you should be careful to not grind the end of the shaft. There is a shoulder on the inside of the shaft ( it is hollow) that hold the rebound needle in place. If you grind the shoulder off, the needle will fall out after you put the shock back together. RaceTech has a great video on how to diassemble, clean, revalve and assemble the shock. I would recommend that you purchase one if you want to do this the correct way. I'll look for some other links that also might help.

Oh, I meant to ask "why are you taking the nut off, are you going to REVALVE the shock?"
There is no reason to take the nut off and the piston/valving unless you are going to revalve, install an aftermarket piston, or change the shock seal.

I thought he wanted to replace the seal, that is why I told him to take it off. Maybe I should have asked first. He said rebuild and I assumed that meant oil seal.

yes, you do need to take the nut of the replace the seal. One thing about the KX shock seals, you can not buy the seal from Kawasaki. I doubt that you will be able to buy the entire shock seal head, but you can call you're friendly Kawi dealer to ask. I just did a 2002 KX 250 shock seal, and I had to purchase the seal from Race Tech. You will then need to take the seal out of the seal head. This can be somewhat of a pain, so be patient and take your time. Actually those are good word to use when you're working on anything!
