Look into a technique called notching. People apparently cut a slit in valves and it does magical wonders. You can make ports bigger but usually cams are then required to supply the new flow required.

but cutting slits in the valve does not sound good really... sounds like a weak point to me

It is not a deep cut. It is a cut on the face of the valve which simply causes fuel/air to mix better cause well... more power and more fuel economy. Obviously not as important as the power but it is still there.
