| Pro Mototips Member | valve train so, i was riding today about an hour in my bike starts loosing power and back-firing whenever i let off the throttle and eventually died i pull off to the side of the road(yes i said road) to check for fuel and if i have any left dump it on the fuel pick up side turns out i had plenty of fuel left i go to start my bike and hear a clicking noise coming from the head i figured i ruined the valves running it on the road at high rpm(i need a bigger sprocket for that) end up getting picked up because my bike will not start and the trail i was on left me about 10 miles from my town i get home start working on my bike looking at the valves checking for play and such then i take the cover to the gear on the cam off and see that there is a ton of slack in my timing chain now my question is how do i tell if my timing chain is worn out? my chain tensioner is fully extended but i believe the chain "slide"(plastic peace that follows the chain) may be worn a lot

| Super Moderator | replace the timing chain and gears. also take a good look at the valves and make sure you didnt bend one, it may have skipped timing.

| Administrator | It is not worth the risk. Just replace the chain and obviously go looking from there.

| Administrator | Ahhh... Guides. I did all the right steps including cleaning my head and baking it in the oven. I started to put decent pressure on them with the A-Press and said nah... I will just have this done. The machine shop down the street hooked me up with a deal and now I am good to go.

| Administrator | Ya, they press in and out. They press them out towards the top of the head. However, you need to make sure that they are the same height. Too high in the head means engine seizure from the retainer bottoming out on the stem seal and guide.

| Administrator | They just press in there. No shims. If they are too low I don't think there is a real thing but you could be putting weird axial load on the valve stems.
