Red hot exhaust...

I have a 2001 YZ250F it was really hard to start so I adjusted my valve shims and double checked that the clearance was to spec but after a minute of fire up my exhaust is glowing orange. The bike did sit for about a month or so could the carbs be gumed up from sitting and they just need to be cleaned out or do i need to do some serious checking of the valves and compression test? If anybody has any info on this drop me a line on what I should be doing Thanks Elfie

really hard to start? every time? did the header glow before? backfire while trying to start? does it lack power while riding? if your answering order was: yes, yes, no, yes, yes then you have a bad cdi or u managed to shear a keyway and timing is off. otherwise i will give u a lot more other things to check. just thought i would get this out first.

the pipe on our bikes is cooled by air passing over it, when they are sitting still, no air is passing over it, that and I dont think you would want to touch your exhaust for about an hour and a half after riding it for a while.
also for the starting you do realize that their is a starting procedure for these bikes right?
