question,
yamaha specs say pilot jet 1 1/2 turns out
it has no spring or washer surely it's in till tight,eh?
in this instance do you suppose the mean the throttle screw on outside of carb?

only the idle screw has a spring ..you should try a hotter plug depends how you ride the bike though

NO! hotter plugs are not the solution, Tig is right there has been alot of that advice going aroung. re-jet it if it is rich or lean, dont just change the plug

the air screw does have a spring behind it, or it should, take it completely out and there should be a spring behind it, it helps keep it from loosening up, that why it was like 13 turns out probly

lock tight, not the permanent stuff though that would be bad...

if you can't find a spring for it

not sure about aftermarket exhaust, the bike is 83 yz125k mx model.

i appreciate the replies, and i'm not going to pester everyone.but for the forum i'll tell for others having similar problems.

keep in mind when i parked this fifteen years ago she was running great throughout all throttle 1/4,1/2,to full.the problem was with the busted float i could only get so far before the bowl emptied or flooded(i don't know which) and i'd be stranded and pusshing the old girl back home.

so pulled her out the other day, cleaned all ports and jets(only poking not disassembling)fired her up right off and drove her around my neighborhood five times.this is when i discovered the throttle problem

take car apart, completely disassembled float set to factory specs, put her on kick it,
hits one time then quits, check fuel no fuel at tank, the dearn tank vapor locked(overnight) from dirt dobbers.
kick again, now i get a quick start, to stall.won't idle.check plug, it's ,moist not wet.
ground it to block(it's dark now)see fire, but not to level spark i perceive it should be?
put plug back in,same thing quick run then stall.adjust air screw out ten turns and fires off and she runs for about 5 minutes then when i give it a little throttle she dies.
takes about 15 more kicks and several backfires and she's running again.little throttle, same thing dead again with a backfire.

so, i'm stumped.i haven't checked compression yet, but when i checked the reeds i pushed the kick a couple times and had plenty compression sound.
the guy i bought it from swore he'd just rebuilt it, but he also lied about the float/rather didn't tell me.

so i'm tossing and turning and thinking if my old camaro from high school acted like this, and it's apparent i was getting fuel i'd swear i had a firing problem, especially with the backfiring.

so this morning before heading to work i pulled the magneto, and it appears to have a glaze over the shaft and the metal, so i'm going to lightly sand them, put in an ngk plug, as well as a gallon premium fuel and see what happens next.

anybody got anything to add i should look for?

sounds too rich or just not a strong enough spark. how about gapping between the flywheel and magneto. slip a business card between, snug down magneto, turn flywheel to get out business card.
