engine runs backwards

my friends got a 91 RT180 and when you kick it,it jumps back and starts running backwards but the only thing thats wrong with it is the cranks got a little play in it.its been like that for along time though,so do you guys think its time for a new crank or case bearings or could it be something else?

ive heard of this happening before but am unaware of how to correct the problem, only 2strokes do it to my knowledge

yeah its pretty weird but it ran fine for a year i think and then it just started doing it,doesn't really make any sense.

if a two stroke starts backwards, it will run backwards, i think. make sure the kick start shaft isnt backwards. idk really, but check out that stuff

That is strange! I would check the kickstarter like TJ said.

or you could push it backwards to try to start it, maybe it would the crankshaft turning right.

... how could the crank start spinning the wrong way from kick starting?
i could understand if you drifted backwards and coast started you bike

i think it has something to do with the ignition timing seeing as how thats all you need to change the engines rotation
