cam mod

I was wondering if I can perform the same cam mod on my 04 YZ450F that is performed on the YFZ450 quads? The motors are basicly the same and since my bike is down for repairs I figured I can do it.

basicly it is retarding the exhaust cam one tooth to produce more mid and top end horsepower

thats nice! as long as the lift on the cam isnt different i wouldnt see why not. just turn it over a few times to make sure nothing is hitting and i would assume everything is good.

the cam lobes must be different because I did the adjustment. I wouldn't recommend it unless you get the right cam. I have to switch it back because the bike wont start now and all it will do is backfire threw the exhaust. live and learn I guess.

i bet timing is different and u pushed it to far off. it seems like they would at least change timing between a bike and quad.

I am not to sure. I took it apart and put it back and it started right back up. maybe I went the wrong way and advanced the exhaust cam and it was closing before it reached the complete exhaust stroke, I don't know. I know for now I am going to leave it the way it is. When I am done riding for the year maybe I'll mess with it some more. You know.. maybe the cam mod that they do on the quad is to bring it where yamaha has it set on the bikes. They may have it set that way to detune them for a reason on quads, for more low end torque. The bikes do have more of an advantage over quads and they don't require all the low end that a quad needs. Unless I change cams, I am going to leave it where it is.

ya, i imagine u made sure to turn the engine over a few times after retarding the timing to make sure that valves are not being hit by the piston.

yeah. I turned the motor over by hand before I replaced the valve cover and the timing covers. after I determined everything was fine I put it back together and started it right up. runs great. one thing I didn't do and need to do is check the valve lash.
